About

My name is Kit Barker. I live in Sheffield, UK with my wife and three kids. I run an Internet development company, Ascension Design, and have just agreed to run more than 150 miles in 6 days. I should tell you that I’m overweight, unfit and haven’t done any serious exercise in about 5 years…

This blog is a record of my journey to the extra-ordinary. Fed up with being ordinary, I want to do something amazing. Something that normal people don’t do.

After seeing Eddie Izzard run all around the UK, doing a marathon a day, six days a week inspired me. I’d tried running to get fit and lose weight before but never had the motivation.

But here was Eddie Izzard, 48 years old and pretty much out of shape (he’d only done about 5 weeks preparation) running around the UK by the power of his will. Or at least much more will power than fitness.

If Eddie can do it, why can’t I? Granted, I can’t decide to take 7 weeks away from work or my family but surely there’s something  I can do.

I suggested the idea to my friend Stephen ‘Smack’ McMurray and the journey was born. We would run the coast to coast, around 150 miles, in 6 days in Spring 2010.

Our duo became a team of four when our good friends John-Paul Walker and Rich Atkinson agreed to join us.

I’m not doing it for charity, or for any other good cause except me. It’s selfish I know but why do we need an excuse to be extraordinary?

This website is my experience in getting from a guy who hasn’t done any real exercise for about 5 years and gets tired jogging to the shops less than a mile away, to someone who can run 25 miles each day for six days.

Update: We’re no longer running the “Coast to Coast”, but Hadrian’s Wall plus an extra 60 miles or rather 60 miles then Hadrian’s Wall. For various reasons the route changed more than once. But we’re still running 150 miles in 6 days…
